HS Music electives strive to give students an in depth experience learning, creating, and performing music.
Music Electives Offered
In order to graduate, every student must have earned credit in at least one Arts class. At Heatly, we offer many music electives that help students earn this credit and more. If you are interested in any of the following electives, please see Ms. Dzembo or Mrs. Zeppieri, the guidance counselor, for more information. Ms. Dzembo utilizes Remind and Google Classroom, as well as Noteflight and Soundation-For-Education in most HS Music Classes.
Music Appreciation Full Year - 1 Credit Prerequisite: None
Music Appreciation is designed as an introductory course exploring the many aspects of music in our culture and in our lives. The student will learn and demonstrate understanding of musical elements through various online tools. Students will compose and create music using a digital audio workstation (DAW) and an online music notation program. A very basic study of music theory and composition is included in the curriculum. Students will also explore the history of modern American music and music's cultural significance. Students will learn to analyze music from varied times nad cultures. This course is an elective for all students looking to meet the art graduation requirement.
Musical Keyboarding I
Half Year - .5 Credit Prerequisite: None
Musical Keyboarding I is designed for students looking to learn how to play the piano. The student will gain an in-depth knowledge of music theory and perform pieces on the piano from various resources. The student will also explore the significance of important piano composers and the history of the instrument.
Musical Keyboarding II
Half Year - .5 Credit Prerequisite: Musical Keyboarding II
Musical Keyboarding II is designed for students looking continue their study of the instrument. The student will gain an in-depth knowledge of music theory and perform pieces on the piano from various resources. The student will also explore the significance of important piano composers and the history of the instrument.
Rock and Roll History (HVCC)
Half Year - .5 Credit (Only offered in the Spring Semester)
HVCC College in the High School: 3 Credits
Prerequisite: None
Rock and Roll History, a College in the High School elective, is designed to furnish the student with the knowledge and experience necessary to develop the art of listening intelligently and perceptively to various styles of Rock and Roll music. It will also increase enjoyment and appreciation of music in general. The course examines the evolution of Rock and Roll from its origins in the early 1950s through to early 21st century work and will include a study of such music and artists as folk, country, Elvis Presley, soft rock, Motown, the Beatles, disco, heavy metal, acid rock, rap, hip hop, punk rock and more. Students also will examine the impact of Rock and Roll in our society – socially, culturally, economically, politically and musically.
Concert Choir I and II
Full Year - 1 Credit Prerequisite: None
This is a performance-oriented course designed to teach students singing skills through a varied repertoire of music and group vocal instruction. Music theory, ear training, ensemble skills, and a basic overview of vocal production are emphasized in this course. Several performance opportunities exist throughout the course of the year, including at least one required performance. This course is an elective for all students looking to meet the art graduation requirement.
Independent Vocal Study
Full Year - 1 Credit Prerequisite: Instructor Approval
This is a performance-oriented course designed to teach students singing skills through a varied repertoire of music and small group vocal instruction. Music theory, ear training, and an in depth look at vocal production are emphasized in this course. This course is an elective for all students looking to meet the art graduation requirement.
